How Claude Code usage limits work
Claude Code is included with Claude Pro and Max subscriptions (not the Free plan). Both Pro and Max have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for the Fable model.
These limits are shared across Claude (web, desktop, mobile) and Claude Code, including Claude Code in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains IDEs. Everything you do in either tool counts against the same limits, and you see warnings as you approach one.
If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set on your system, Claude Code uses that key and bills API rates instead of your subscription.
When limits reset
Limits reset per five-hour session and per week. Anthropic's help article doesn't give exact reset clock times, so check in-app (/status) for yours.
What happens when you hit the limit
Pro: upgrade to Max 5x, enable usage credits, switch to a Claude Console account with API credits, or wait for the reset. Max: move from 5x to 20x, enable usage credits, use Console API credits, or wait. Max plans' monthly API credits can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps. If you hit the 5-hour limit mid-response, Claude Code may briefly "wrap up" the current step (rolling out gradually).
How to check your usage
