Claude Max limits explained: 5x vs 20x
Short answer (checked 2026-10-22): Max 5x is $100 a month and Max 20x is $200, giving 5x or 20x the Pro plan's usage allowance per 5-hour session. Both also have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit. Anthropic doesn't publish how big the weekly cap is, which is where most of the confusion comes from.

What "5x" and "20x" mean
Anthropic's help page says Max 5x includes five times, and Max 20x twenty times, the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance; the session limit resets every five hours. Pro and Max both have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and the limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code. Max is sold as a monthly subscription only; Anthropic notes mobile prices may differ. Anthropic hasn't published the weekly cap size for any plan, so we show it as not published rather than repeat estimates.
Which fits you
- You rarely hit a limit: stay on Pro ($20, or $17/mo on annual billing).
- You hit the five-hour limit mid-session: Max gives a bigger allowance, and 20x is the largest.
- You run out mid-week, not mid-session: watch Settings > Usage for a couple of weeks before paying for 20x, since the weekly gain isn't published.
- You're a team: the Team Premium seat is $100/seat (annual), $125 monthly.
